General Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy James Hardie siding?

As a James Hardie-trained and certified Elite Preferred contractor, we offer the full line of James Hardie products in our region. Unfortunately, we don’t sell products in a retail setting. In fact, nearly all of the James Hardie product line is available only through an installer who has proven their ability to install the products properly.

What brand of paint do you use?

Home Exterior Systems uses Sherwin-Williams paint finishes. Above all, we have found that the SW line offers the widest array of colors and durability options tailored for the harsh Houston-area climate. For instance, Super Paint, Duration, Resilience, and Emerald are among our favorites, depending on the project. We use specialty coatings such as Romabio for masonry applications.

What makes Home Exterior Systems stand out from other contractors in the Houston area?

We’re a small, family-owned business with over 15 years of experience, focused exclusively on premium brands like James Hardie, Andersen, Pella, Simonton, GAF, and Tamko. Our awards for quality and excellence from best-in-class manufacturers, along with high customer satisfaction ratings, reflect our commitment to craftsmanship, transparent pricing, and personalized service. We handle everything in-house, from initial consultations to final inspections, ensuring accountability and excellence.

What is a change order?

Change orders are instruments contractors use to account for changes to an agreed scope of work and associated costs for labor and materials. It is not unusual for a customer to make late changes and additions to their project after the project has begun. For example, they may decide to add some fancier trim around some new windows. Or they may decide to change their front entry door for a different style mid project. This would be handled via a change order.

A Warning About Change Orders

We must warn homeowners about the use of change orders by unscrupulous contractors who make a habit of deliberately lowballing their quotes then using the change order once the project begins. There’s a huge difference between reacting to surprise damage, and deliberately quoting low to win the job only to hit you with the real costs after they’ve removed old materials. Do your homework, call those references and discuss this point!

How do I know if I need a full crew or a Handyman for my job?

In general, we estimate the complexity and the time it will take to complete a project list. If a versatile and experienced Handyman can handle the tasks involved in a matter of hours, and a single trip or two, then we usually recommend that route.

However, if the job is likely to require certain specialized equipment, multiple skilled people, and possibly a lot of building materials, then we recommend a crew. There is gray area as the project urgency and timeline also must be considered as well as the need for inspections and permits.

Handyman vs full crew example:

Repairing and painting a single plank, or a single hole in the drywall, is clearly Handyman. However, replacing all siding on a two-story residential wall, or building out an attic space, well, those are usually best tackled by a crew.

Handyman services have become an important part of our remodeling business. We even formalized it as a stand-alone company called My Handyman Repairs.

Do you use subcontractors?

Yes, like nearly all top remodeling companies and replacement contractors, we use subcontractors extensively. Here’s why:

  • Long-term, multi-year relationships are cultivated with the best local subcontractors for mutual benefit.
  • Every Sub’s skill menu differs. We know how to match the right subcontractor to the requirements of every project assigned.
  • Subcontractors are businesses that know what it takes to excel at their work. We prefer to work with high-quality, specialized businesses that meet our stringent requirements rather than try to hire them. We stay in our lane and focus on what we do as general contractors. Think of it as HES hiring the best specialists for each job.
  • Replacement subcontractors’ crews are highly specialized and, in general, much more versatile than new construction crews. They typically prefer to focus on their trade and the production side of projects rather than the administrative side of the business.
  • The unpredictable nature of construction, driven by weather, material availability, and specialized skills, better supports a subcontractor model for companies of any size.
  • Scalability enables all companies to engage in cooperative competition, or “coopetition,” in which competing contractors freely assist each other during unusual periods of high or low activity to keep local skilled craftsmen productive.
  • Ultimately, the best companies work with the best subs nearly exclusively. Mutual understanding and trust take years to build, and the results are astounding.
  • At the end of the day, you, the homeowner, win with one single “throat to choke” if you’re unhappy for any reason at all. Your warranty and satisfaction are ALWAYS Home Exterior Systems’ responsibility for the work we bill you for and perform. That’s where the years in business and the paperwork and ethics matter!

Siding Replacement Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose James Hardie siding?

James Hardie fiber-cement siding is superior for its beauty and lasting durability in Houston’s humid, stormy climate. It’s resistant to rot, insects, fire, and fading, while offering the look of wood without the maintenance. It can lower energy bills by improving environmental resilience and increasing your home’s resale value.

What’s the process for siding replacement?

We start with a thorough inspection to identify any underlying issues, such as water damage. Then, we remove old siding, install weather barriers, and precisely fit the new James Hardie panels. Final touches include caulking, painting (if needed), and cleanup. We minimize disruption to your daily life.

What happens if damage is more severe than expected?

We try desperately to prepare for what we find once we remove the old materials. Nobody likes surprises, but if we uncover previously undetected damage (mold, rot, or other unsafe conditions), we’ll work with you to correct it based on its extent and severity. We prepare for some moisture / pest damage as you would expect in the Houston area. But only so much before we need to talk about a change order. Which are a means for accounting for unexpected changes to a job.

How much does James Hardie siding cost?

Costs range from $20,000 to $30,000 for an average Houston home, depending on size, style (e.g., plank vs. shingle), and add-ons like trim. This includes materials, labor, and removal of old siding. We provide itemized quotes to ensure transparency.

Window Replacement Frequently Asked Questions

What are the differences between Andersen, Pella, and Simonton windows?

Each of these manufacturers of windows represent what we consider the best brands for our harsh Gulf Coast climate. Here’s why:

  • Andersen: Premium wood and composite options with superior energy efficiency and customization; ideal for high-end homes.
  • Pella: Innovative designs with wood, fiberglass, or vinyl; known for durability and smart home integration.
  • Simonton: Affordable vinyl windows with excellent thermal performance; great for budget-conscious upgrades. All brands we offer are Energy Star-rated and suited for Houston’s heat and hurricanes.

Will new windows help with energy efficiency?

Yes! Our windows feature low-E glass, argon gas fills, and tight seals that reduce heat transfer, potentially cutting your cooling costs by 15-30%. We also offer impact-resistant windows for storm protection, which can lower insurance premiums in Texas.

What’s involved in window installation?

We measure precisely for a custom fit, remove old windows without damaging your walls, install the new ones with proper insulation and sealing, and test for functionality. Most installations are mess-free and completed in a day or two per section of the house.

How much do window replacements cost?

Per window, for a common 36 x 72 operator expect $800-$2,500 installed, depending on brand, size, and features (e.g., double-hung vs. casement). A full home replacement might total $5,000-$20,000. We factor in Houston’s building requirements for accurate pricing.

Roofing Replacement Frequently Asked Questions

What brands and types of roofing do you install?

We specialize in GAF and Tamko’s asphalt shingles, including the GAF Timberline HDZ and Tamko Titan line for enhanced wind resistance (up to 130 mph) and algae protection. Options include architectural shingles for a dimensional look or designer styles mimicking slate or wood shakes, all built for Houston’s heavy rains and heat.

How do I know if my roof needs to be replaced?

Signs include missing/shifting shingles, leaks, granule loss, or an age of over 20 years. (Some insurance companies now won’t insure your home if the roof is over 10 years old.) We offer free roof inspections to assess damage from storms, sun exposure, or poor ventilation, which is common in Texas homes. In some cases, damage from high winds or hail might go undetected until a properly trained expert inspects the roof. Vents, skylights, and other roof penetrations also may show signs of deterioration. Properly installed and functioning flashing is another critical component of a quality roof.

What’s the roofing installation process?

We begin with tearing off the old roof, inspecting and repairing the decking, installing underlayment and ice/water shields, then laying the new GAF or Tamko shingles with proper flashing and ventilation. We ensure compliance with local codes and thoroughly clean up.

How much does a GAF roof replacement cost?

For a typical 2,000 sq ft Houston home, costs range from $12,000 to

$15,000, influenced by roof pitch, materials, and extras like ridge vents. GAF’s Golden Pledge warranty can extend coverage when installed by certified contractors like us.

Patio Remodeling Frequently Asked Questions

What patio remodeling options do you offer?

We design custom patios using durable materials like stamped concrete, pavers, composite decking, or natural stone. Add-ons include covered pergolas, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, and lighting, creating a functional extension of your Houston home for year-round enjoyment.

How does the patio remodeling process work?

It starts with a design consultation to match your vision and budget. We handle permitting, if needed, prepare the site (grading and drainage), install the base and surfacing, and add features. We focus on Houston’s soil and flood risks for long-lasting results.

Will a new patio increase my home’s value?

Definitely, a well-designed patio can boost resale value by 10-15% in the Houston market, especially when it features features that enhance outdoor living in our mild climate. It’s a smart investment for entertainment and relaxation.

How much does patio remodeling cost?

Basic patios start at $5,000-$10,000 for 200-400 sq ft, while fully customized ones with covers and amenities can reach $20,000-$50,000. Costs depend on size, materials, and complexity—we’ll break it down in your quote.
